Chief Justice Sharon L. Kennedy Highlights Judicial Independence and Timely Justice in Annual State of the Judiciary Address

Chief Justice Sharon L. Kennedy of the Supreme Court of Ohio delivered a powerful and inspiring State of the Judiciary address today at the Ohio Judicial Conference, held at the Hilton Columbus at Easton. Speaking to an audience of judges and judicial leaders from across the state, Chief Justice Kennedy emphasized the importance of judicial independence, timely justice, innovation, and community partnerships in shaping the future of Ohio’s courts.

In her remarks, Chief Justice Kennedy celebrated the ingenuity of Ohio’s judiciary, highlighting the transformative impact of specialized dockets and community-driven initiatives. She also unveiled new strategies to enhance access to justice, improve case timeliness, and support the next generation of legal professionals.

“Judicial independence is the cornerstone of our Republic,” Chief Justice Kennedy stated. “It is your independence and ingenuity that drive Ohio courts to meet the people where they are—through specialized dockets, community partnerships, and ensuring that all who enter our courthouses have a meaningful opportunity to be heard.”

Chief Justice Kennedy also praised the progress made in reducing case backlogs across Ohio’s courts, attributing the success to the dedication of judges statewide.

“When a case languishes, justice delayed becomes justice denied,” she said. “Thanks to your leadership, timeliness is improving across all courts, and we are delivering on our solemn responsibility to administer justice efficiently and fairly.”

The Chief Justice’s address also included a call to action for Ohio’s judiciary to continue fostering public trust through civic education and community engagement. She encouraged judges to participate in the upcoming America 250 initiative, which celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, as an opportunity to educate citizens about the role of the judiciary.

The event was live streamed on the Supreme Court of Ohio’s website, and a recording is available for viewing and download. For more information about the State of the Judiciary address or the initiatives discussed, visit www.supremecourt.ohio.gov.
