Seats of Justice: A Look at Muskingum County

Next on the Supreme Court tour of Ohio’s seats of justice is the Muskingum County courthouse in Zanesville.

Located on U.S. 40 near the iconic Y-Bridge, this courthouse clock tower rises above its neighboring downtown buildings and can be seen aglow at night by travelers on Interstate 70.

Community leaders tell the story of Zanesville’s founding in 1797 by trailblazing pioneer, Ebeneezer Zane.

The city was home to some of the first settlers in Ohio.

Two courthouses preceded the current structure, all built on the same grounds. The second briefly served as Ohio’s state capital from 1810 until 1812 before relocating to Columbus.

Learn about the county’s impact during the anti-slavery movement in this mini-documentary, and see tilework, murals, and sculptures that makes this courthouse a treasure to the community.

Check back in for new episodes on the journey though Ohio’s diverse county courthouse landscape, or catch up on past installments.
