Seats of Justice: Scioto County
The next stop on the trip through Ohio’s county courthouses takes viewers to south-central Ohio in Scioto County! Scioto County was established in 1803, and is known for its hilly landscape, often mistaken for mountains.
The current courthouse officially opened in Portsmouth in 1927, right next to the original building. Displayed inside is a letter from former President William Howard Taft at the time the new courthouse opened. It was penned while he was serving as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
The Scioto County Courthouse shares much in common with the Supreme Court of Ohio, including its historic Cutler mail chuting system and murals painted by Cincinnati artist Herman Henry Wessel.
