Ashtabula County Celebrates Graduates in Recovery

Ashtabula County recently celebrated three graduates from one of their specialized docket programs.
The Ashtabula Municipal Court houses a specialized docket focused on recovery for offenders with misdemeanor charges who have substance abuse issues. The voluntary program includes weekly treatment team and support group meetings to maintain accountability for those participating, as well as requirements for employment and housing. Participants must also take part in an intensive treatment plan guided by court authorities, such as Judge Laura DiGiacomo and Court Administrator Kathy Kasputis, and mental health and substance abuse professionals. The program aims to give people the opportunity to go through treatment to reduce the likelihood of returning to court with more charges.
“Addiction is a difficult disease to try to overcome on your own. The support from the treatment team lets the participants know they are not alone,” said Kasputis.
Over the past eight years of the specialized docket, there have been nearly 50 graduates. Many of them attended the ceremony and showed their support in recognizing new graduates Kerrey Allen, Kimberly Waller, and David Olson for their efforts toward recovery. Friends, family, and other members of the community joined the celebration.
The graduation ceremony, led by Judge DiGiacomo, also highlighted the treatment teams, the docket’s advisory committee, and others who have found success through similar programs.
“It is an honor and a privilege to be part of this ceremony. It's nice to see everyone here to support the participants in the program,” Judge DiGiacomo remarked.
While the program is intensive, the graduates’ determination has granted them new beginnings and hopeful futures, the judge noted.
