Seats of Justice: Wyandot County

The next stop in the exploration through Ohio’s county courthouses takes viewers to northwestern Ohio in Wyandot County!

The hard-working, farming community fosters a close-knit bond between residents. It’s known as a place where “everybody knows everybody.”

The current courthouse in Upper Sandusky was built in 1900 and is trusted by the community to uphold the law and serve justice. The courthouse also functions as a business center, hosting the treasurer, auditor, and recorder.

Wyandot’s history is upheld in their courthouse. The shield at the west entrance is one of the few artifacts on display from the original courthouse built in the late 1840’s. The plaque under the stairway pays tribute to those who served in the Civil War.

The courtroom is adorned with painted words for all to see, emphasizing judicial values. The courtroom can also be seen in the film “Shawshank Redemption,” where community members participated as extras.

America is preparing for its 250th birthday on July 4, 2026, The Court is celebrating the semiquincentennial with a year-long celebration called “The Story of America" highlighting significant historical events.
