Supreme Court Adopts Restructuring of Court Rules
Changes have been made to restructure the rules governing Ohio’s courts. The Supreme Court of Ohio has moved numerous rules from the Rules of Superintendence to the appropriate Rules of Practice and Procedure.
The goals of the restructuring are to create a more logical organization, allow for future expansion and contraction of the rules, and identify rules that should be addressed in other rule publications.
The items moved from the Rules of Superintendence pertain to court practices and procedures, rather than operational and administrative matters.
There are six publications under the Rules of Practice and Procedure:
- Rules of Appellate Procedure
- Rules of Civil Procedure
- Rules of Criminal Procedure
- Rules of Evidence
- Rules of Juvenile Procedure
- Traffic Rules
The newly adopted restructuring changes affect the Civil Rules, Criminal Rules, and Juvenile Rules.
The Commission on the Rules of Superintendence and the Commission on the Rules of Practice and Procedure presented these changes to the Supreme Court. The Court presented the recommendations for public comment before they were adopted.
