Grants have been awarded to 142 Ohio schools to visit Court.

This school year, more students than ever can experience the Supreme Court of Ohio thanks to a record number of grants awarded to schools across the state. As part of its civic education outreach, the Supreme Court awards grants to offset transportation costs to allow schools to take field trips to the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center in Columbus to learn about the court, judicial branch, and the artwork within the building.

For the 2026-27 school year, the Court increased its funding by about 40% compared to last year to bring more schools to the building. The additional funds helped facilitate a large number of applications for the grants, with a record 176 teachers applying. This demonstrates the strong interest from educators seeking in-person, place-based learning opportunities for their students to learn about civics and government.

Overall, 142 schools were awarded a grant ranging from $200-$500, based on distance, to help offset the cost of the bus to bring the students to the Moyer Judicial Center. The grants support schools in 64 Ohio counties, reaching communities in every region of the state and reducing transportation barriers that can prevent students from visiting the Supreme Court. For many schools, especially those farther away from Columbus, transportation costs can be one of the biggest obstacles to planning field trips.

The Court anticipates more than 9,500 Ohio students in grades 4-12 will have a chance to visit the Moyer Judicial Center because of these grants.

When school groups visit Moyer Judicial Center, they will see the Supreme Court Courtroom, Grand Concourse, Visitor Education Center, Native American lobby, and Law Library. Elementary and middle school groups also will participate in a mock trial simulation to learn about trial and legal procedures. Classes that come on days the Court is in session can also see the live oral arguments held before the justices.

All educators are invited to schedule a free school group tour to help bring civics to life for their students. Email CourtTours@sc.ohio.gov or call 614-387-9223 to schedule a tour. Tour bookings are accepted for dates through the end of the school year.
