Court Civic Series Gives Residents Inside Look at Justice
America 250 initiative invites community members to explore how courts serve the public
Residents are getting an inside look at the courts through Hamilton County's Civic Series, a public program exploring how justice is administered and why it matters.
As communities across the nation commemorate America 250, the Hamilton County Common Pleas Court is partnering with the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library to give residents a closer look at one of the foundations of American government: the judicial system.
Through a free public Civic Series, court officials are helping participants better understand how the courts operate, the role they play in everyday life, and why civic engagement remains essential to a healthy society.
Civic Series Highlights Work of Courts
Presented in partnership with the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library, the four-part series is being held at the Walnut Hills Branch Library.
The series began Aug. 4 with “The Courts and the Rule of Law,” an overview of the Hamilton County Common Pleas Court, the role of judges, and the responsibilities of the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts.
The final session, “Specialized Dockets and Courts,” will be held Sept. 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and will examine how specialized court programs address substance use disorders, mental health needs, and the unique challenges facing veterans and individuals returning to the community after incarceration.

Public Invited Behind the Scenes at Historic Courthouse
The court is also partnering with the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts, Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, and Hamilton County Law Library to host “Ohio Open Doors: Inside the Justice System” on Sept. 18.
Scheduled from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Hamilton County Courthouse, the event will give visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the courthouse while introducing them to the agencies and professionals who work together to administer justice.
Both programs are designed to strengthen public understanding of the courts and encourage civic engagement as we mark 250 years of our nation’s history.
America commemorated its 250th birthday on July 4, 2026, marking a historic milestone in the nation's journey. To honor the semiquincentennial, the Supreme Court of Ohio hosted a yearlong celebration titled “The Story of America,” highlighting significant historical events that shaped both the nation and Ohio. In addition to digital content, the initiative has featured special events and exhibits at the Court. The celebration aims to spark curiosity, strengthen civic literacy, and recognize pivotal moments in American and Ohio history.
