Civics and History Celebrated at Record-Setting Open Doors Event
More than 130 visitors explore Ohio’s highest court during annual after-hours tour
A record number of visitors start their Ohio Open Doors tour of the Moyer Judicial Center.
For two September evenings, the Supreme Court of Ohio stayed open late to offer after-hours tours of the majestic Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center. The event was part of Ohio Open Doors, an initiative spearheaded by the Ohio History Connection to have historic and cultural institutions across Ohio hold special events for the public.
With 137 people visiting the Moyer Judicial Center, this set of special tours exceeded previous participation levels. Visitors saw the Courtroom, Grand Concourse, and Visitor Education Center while learning about the civics, history, art, and architecture that make up the building, which is the home of the Supreme Court.
Families, history buffs, legal professionals, educators, and a group from the local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter attended the tours, showing curiosity and enthusiasm.
“It was enlightening and inspiring. I’d love to tour the Supreme Court of Ohio again,” said one of the visitors. Another attendee noted she “shared pictures with my family and friends,” expressing her joy in participating.
The record turnout may reflect a strong public appetite for learning about Ohio’s judicial system, history, and architecture. Visitors also experienced how the Moyer Judicial Center, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, serves as a functioning courthouse that operates in a historic landmark. For many visitors, it also was a memorable opportunity to tour the Court during a year commemorating America’s 250 anniversary.

To honor the semiquincentennial, the Court hosted a year-long celebration titled “The Story of America,” highlighting significant historical events that shaped both the nation and Ohio. In addition to digital content, the initiative has featured special events and exhibits at the Court. The celebration aims to spark curiosity, strengthen civic literacy, and recognize pivotal moments in American and Ohio history.
