A new online tour offers sweeping 360-degree views of the stunning Moyer Judicial Center.
The Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center is a distinctive treasure. Not only is it home to the Supreme Court of Ohio, but it also brims with vibrant artwork, unique architectural details, and unexpected stories of Ohio history. A new, interactive online tour can now transport you to this centerpiece of the Ohio judicial branch. From a laptop, tablet, or mobile phone, explore dozens of locations inside and outside the stunning landmark, and enjoy sweeping 360-degree views of many gorgeous features.
Inside, check out the Grand Concourse, a two-story hallway spanning the full length of the building, or the elaborate details on every wall of the Courtroom, where the Supreme Court hears cases.
Be sure to roam through the informative exhibits of the Visitor Education Center, toured by thousands of students every year. Among the dozens of gallery displays, learn about precedent-setting case decisions, trial and appellate courtrooms, careers in the law, and women who made invaluable contributions to the legal profession and public service. There are also exhibits honoring the Tuskegee Airmen, who served the U.S. armed forces during World War II, and the 42 Ohio justices who are veterans.
Outside, view the sculptures and reflecting pools on the plazas flanking the building. And don’t miss the stone carvings on the exterior facades – with depictions of Ohio industries, such as quarrying and livestock, as well as battles, treaties, and trade in Ohio history.
Renovation Restores Beauty
The majestic structure, first known as the Ohio Departments Building, was constructed from 1930 to 1933. Though referred to as “Ohio’s Pride” at the time, its luster faded across the years. For decades, thousands passed by daily not knowing that inside were ornate lobbies, bronze sculptures recognizing notable Ohioans, hearing spaces decorated with eye-catching murals, references to Roman and Greek mythology, and room after room illustrating the attentive work of artisans, designers, stonemasons, electricians, and many other laborers.
At the direction of the late Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer, the historic space underwent a meticulous renovation that began in 2001. With vision and hard work, the structure was restored to its original glory and reopened in 2004. And the Supreme Court, for the first time in its more than 200-year history, moved into a building devoted solely to the judicial branch. In 2011, it was renamed in honor of Chief Justice Moyer.
