Honoring Service at the Supreme Court

An exhibit with paintings of men in military uniforms

Exhibits in the Visitor Education Center honor and recognize military service.

Veterans Day is a time for reflection and gratitude as Americans remember the service given by people in the U.S. Armed Forces. As the holiday approaches, the Supreme Court of Ohio is showcasing its support for and recognition of veterans by inviting them and the public to visit the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center. In the Supreme Court’s Visitor Education Center, two exhibits specifically focus on military service.

Justices in Uniform is an exhibit that reveals the connection between military service and the judiciary. This display recognizes the 42 Supreme Court of Ohio justices who have served in the armed forces. The service of these justices ranged from 1804 to 2001 across many different branches of the military.

Tuskegee Airmen: Portraits in Courage features five portraits of Tuskegee Airmen pilots. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American military aviators in the U.S. Armed Forces and were renowned for their skill, bravery, and role in breaking racial barriers during World War II. The exhibit tells the story of the airmen, highlighting their perseverance, leadership, and overcoming of barriers. It also explains that what is now Rickenbacker airport in southern Franklin County was used as an airfield for the Tuskegee Airmen in the late 1940s. The portraits were a gift to the Supreme Court from Delaware County artist Robert E. Tanner Sr. in 2008.

The Court sits as a cornerstone of civic engagement, rule of law, freedom, and a remembrance of what our veterans have fought for. The visitors who come to the Court and step into the Visitor Education Center are reminded that civics is not just understanding the role of government, but also an opportunity for community engagement.

The Visitor Education Center is open to the public for self-guided tours during standard business hours. The Court welcomes more than 10,000 visitors a year to learn about history, citizenship, and civic engagement.
